"Cry to Me": Fatherhood and Domestic Violence

The prevalence of violence, especially domestic violence with Caribbean families, has been one of the themes in my two short story collections, Uncle Obadiah and the Alien and Who's Your Daddy?

In the short story, "Cry to Me," from Who's Your Daddy, which I've republished as an eBook, I've combined domestic violence with fatherhood in the story of David Hamilton, a respected professor, whose life is disrupted when his daughter becomes a victim of domestic violence.

I think "Cry to Me" is a precursor to a darker story that I am currently working on in which fatherhood turns ugly. Stay tuned.

Save a Dollar for The Christmas Dutch Pot Baby

As some of you may have noticed, I haven’t been posting as regularly as I used to. My daughter and I are working on a new ebook, The Christmas Dutch Pot Baby. We had had hoped to publish our ebook last week, but my daughter met in a car accident. She’s okay, but her car was totaled.

With the help of my son, who worked on Marcus and the Amazons, we hope to have it ready by this week Friday.

In the meantime, here’s the cover art and a summary of the plot:

On a cold Christmas Eve in Myrtle Grove, Joe and Myriam Lumley find a baby in a Dutch pot on their doorstep. Without hesitating, the Lumleys take the child, whom they name Eleanor, into their home. But little do they know, Attaberra, Queen of the Zemis, who has watched over the island since it rose out of the sea, has been watching their every move. The Queen has also made a prediction about the child. Will her prediction come true?

Stay tuned!

How to Sell E-books at Author Readings

E-books have freed many writers from many of the niggling details of selling physical books at author readings: making change ahead of time, schlepping the books around, having someone watch the table while you read, and worrying about taxes and receipts.

Last week at Barry University, I tested this method at my reading from Bob Marley and Bradford's iPad--a story about a writer whose health and work problems are solved when Bob gives him some sage advice.

Like everything else, it takes a little prep work, but it's worth it. Here are the steps:

1. Let the audience know ahead of time that you'll be reading from an e-book and encourage them to turn on their smartphones with the ringer on vibrate.

2. Set up an e-mail account with a memorable name. I chose: bradfordsipad@gail.com. Try it and see if it works.

3. Once I set up the account, I went to Settings and clicked Vacation Responder on.

4. Then, I copied this text into the Message Box:

Greetings!

Thank you for supporting my work. For indie writers like me, word of mouth/blog/tweet/e-mail is crucial for success.

Here is the link to Bob Marley and Bradford's iPad @ Amazon:

Of if you prefer, @ Barnes & Noble:  http://bit.ly/JeiiHm

My e-book is also available in any style to match your e-reader @Smashwords:  http://bit.ly/JeiDtE

So thank you, thank you, thank you.

& remember, to tell a friend or two *wink wink*.

1Love,

Geoffrey

Follow me on Twitter: @geoffreyphilp

Then, I invited the audience to send an email to bradfordsipad@gail.com, so they could buy the book and read along with me. With the vacation message on, the purchase details were delivered automatically to them.

I also encouraged audience members to live tweet the event. The more audience participation, the better.

The students at Barry University responded positively to the story. So far, I've seen some movement on sales at Amazon, but more at Smashwords because most of the students had Nooks.

Let me know about your success!

New E-Book:Bob Marley: Memories of Jah People By Emmanuel Parata

Bob Marley: Memories of Jah People
By Emmanuel Parata

Emmanuel Parata is a French reggae lover. Since his childhood, he was lulled by the music of Peter Tosh, Jacob Miller, Third World and many other reggae legends...

But one artist in particular stood out: Bob Marley

The music of Bob and his universal message permeates Emmanuel life and that is why he decided to become a collector of memorabilia.

Ten years ago, Emmanuel launched his investigative work. Motivated by his passion for reggae, he began extensive research for rare videos, concerts audios, interviews, unpublished photographs and newspaper clippings of Bob Marley & the Wailers.

Wanting to share his passion with fans around the world, he decided to create his website in 2010 BobMarleyArchive.com, and to open its archives of audio clips, interviews, rare photos, and a section called "Memories." These have now been assembled into an eBook, Bob Marley: Memories of Jah People.

"I thought there were many fans of Bob Marley, but many of these fans have never met or even seen Bob in concert, so I created Memories Of Jah People so that they can live the moment as if they were there," said Emmanuel. "About a year ago, I collected unpublished stories, real stories of people who met Bob Marley in professional settings, in person, or just at a concert. I have assembled these stories in an interactive book, and the reaction of the fans and feedback have been mostly positive."

"My new project is to write a book with a lot of stories, illustrated with original photos from my personal collection. It may take a long time, but I want the best for the fans. And I hope my dream will come true..."

It is still a work in progress. Stay tuned...Emmanuel

PS: I am always looking for even more stories...

New Ebook: Rastafari -- The New Creation by Barbara Makeda Blake Hannah

RASTAFARI - THE NEW CREATION (Gold Medal Edition) [Kindle Edition]
Barbara Makeda Blake Hannah (Author)

Digital List Price: $35.00
Kindle Price: $35.00

Product Description

The first book on the Rastafari religion written by a member of the faith. First published in 1980, the book contains information on the principles and philosophy of the faith including chapters on Emperor Haile Selassie I, Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley, the founding fathers, the Ganja sacrament, and reggae music. Fully illustrated with rare colour and black & white photos and icons of the faith.

From the Author

This book was written in 1981 while I was researching Marcus Garvey at the Schomberg Museum in Harlem, New York. It grew out of five articles published in the STAR newspaper in Jamaica in 1977 and was first self-published in New York in 1981. The second edition was published in Jamaica, then in 1983 an edition was published in London, England.  Since then there have been two revised editions and the book took on colour covers.  The 6th edition was  published in 2007 in Jamaica.  This Gold Medal edition is, as all the others, fully revised with additonal information and pictures.

About the Author

BARBARA MAKEDA BLAKE HANNAH is a Jamaican who has been writing all her life and is the author of four books and numerous articles on Jamaican culture, entertainment and humanist philosophy. She is also a film maker, directing 8 films including the noted documentary 'Race, Rhetoric, Rastafari' for CHANNEL 4 UK in 1983.

After moving to London in 1964, Barbara gained notoriety in 1968 as the first Black journalist on British TV (THAMES, ATV, BBC). Returning to Jamaica in 1972, she adopted the Rastafari faith and wrote the first book on the religion written by a practising member. It has been re-published in 7 editions and though copies are sold only in Jamaica, the book has travelled the world and been read by people of all nations.

Her second book, the novel 'JOSEPH - A RASTA REGGAE FABLE', was inspired by the life of her friend Bob Marley and was re-published in 2005 by Macmillan. Her third book 'HOME - THE FIRST SCHOOL' recounts her experiences as Jamaica's homeschooling pioneer, educating her son Makonnen from birth until he made world history in 1998, when he was appointed Youth Technology Consultant to the Jamaican Government at age 13 years.

In 2010 Hansib Publishers UK published Barbara's fourth book 'GROWING OUT: Black Hair & Black Pride', a memoir of her early years and the decade she spent living in England.

Given the Ethiopian Orthodox Church baptizmal name Makeda in 1984, Mrs. Hannah was appointed an Independent Opposition Senator in the Jamaican Parliament, and gave birth to her son in 1985. The Ethiopian Crown Council awarded her a Gold Adowa Centenary Medal in 1998 for her services to the Ethiopian Royal family, and in 2010 the Rastafari Youth Initiative Council (Jamaica) awarded her the Empress Mennen Award.

She has lectured at the Universities of the West Indies (Jamaica & Guyana campuses), New York, Vienna - Austria, US Virgin Islands and Florida International University, and was a member of the Jamaican delegation to the United Nations World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) held in 2001 in Durban, South Africa.

Barbara has organized several film festivals in Jamaica since 1974. In 2008 she initiated an annual Reggae Film Festival screening films that include or document Jamaica's reggae music culture. In her spare time Barbara enjoys the beauty of Jamaica's countryside, beaches, foods and people. She writes a weekly entertainment blog and participates in television and radio programmes on Jamaican culture.

Two Children Review Marcus and the Amazons

5.0 out of 5 stars Comments from an 8 year old girl and 10 year old boyAugust 9, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Marcus and the Amazons (Blue Mountain Series) (Kindle Edition)
It is not often that both of my children enjoy the same book, but Marcus and the Amazons
was one exception.

My daughter read it first and loved it. Her comments:
"I liked the adventure especially when they had to rescue the princess. I enjoyed the end."

My son would not read it at first. His sister enjoyed it so he assumed it must be "girly",

but eventually he started it and was so engrossed that he did not put it down until he was finished.
He is looking forward to book two.

Blessings to the children. One Heart,
Geoffrey

Praise for Marcus and the Amazons @ Tallawah

"Seeming more human and powerfully life-like than anything, the tiny characters leap off the page. And if it weren’t for the book’s vivid illustrations one could easily be led to believe that the story is populated by actual people. It’s a testament to Philp’s compelling way with dialogue and characterization and his conviction in his craft. Marcus’ journey of self-discovery and the lead-up to the story’s climax are particularly wonderful."

Marcus and the Amazons @ Keiser University

Sometimes, reading for an audience never goes quite as planned.

I had prepared my notes, PowerPoint, and bundled all my books, including Dub Wise, for my reading at Keiser University on July 13, 2011.

At first, everything went as planned. I read from the first chapter of Marcus and the Amazons and encouraged the students to download the preview at Amazon. I also introduced the students via my PowerPoint to the book trailer, Facebook page, and blog for Marcus. But then, something happened that took me off my plan. The students were keenly interested in e publishing and the process of creating Marcus and the Amazons.

The question gave me the opportunity to speak about the genesis of Marcus and the Amazons, and the challenges of being an Indie author in a digital environment.

The first challenge is the stereotype that many readers associate with Indie publishing. But as John Locke has explained, no one calls it a "vanity business" if you decide to set up an independent insurance company (as he did), but if you self-publish, it's called "vanity publishing." The other stereotype is that a self-published book is somehow lower in quality than those books coming out of the major publishing houses in New York and London. This is a stereotype that many Caribbean writers still confront, and which, sadly, is one of the legacies of colonialism: the goods and services of the "mother country"  are always superior to anything "local."

These are just a few of the issues that an Indie author must face before she has written a single word. Then, there are the doubts: Am I good enough? What will my peers think? What if it doesn't meet up to my standards of taste? But you have to push through and write.

Then, after you've written the manuscript, proofread at least ten times, and sent it off to a copyeditor (as I did), the next step is formatting. Fortunately, my son did most of that for me and my other son, Patrick Pollack, created the graphics. Uploading to Smashwords and Amazon  was the easiest part of the process.

Next, comes the marketing, which some writers find distasteful. There are many authors who would much rather write the book, turn it over to a publisher, and let the publishers worry about the rest. These authors complain that marketing takes away from their writing time. It does. This is why Indie authors rely so much on the support of their readers.

When you are an Indie writer, you are the author, editor, proofreader, PR, therapist, coach, and booking agent. And you have to do all this while sometimes holding down a full time job. As I said to the students, "To be an Indie author, you must have the discipline of a warrior and the whimsy of a fool."

With that, I thought I was done, but the students wanted more. So, I read from Cry to Me, Third Time, and Dub Wise. It wasn't enough. I ended the reading with a poem from Twelve Poems and a Story for Christmas.

It was a great experience to read and talk with the students at Keiser University, who took me out of my comfort zone with the probing questions. Give thanks to Belkis L. Cabrera, for inviting me, and to Alissa Stone and Henry Georget for their generous support of my work.
