Ngugi wa Thiong'o

Dreams in a Time of War (Pantheon, $24.95) is Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s evocative and affecting memoir of childhood. The world-renowned novelist, playwright, critic, and author of Wizard of the Crow, deftly etches a bygone era, capturing the landscape, the people, and their culture; the social and political vicissitudes of life under colonialism and war; and the troubled relationship between an emerging Christianized middle class and the rural poor.

Dreams in a Time of War speaks to the human right to dream even in the worst of times. It abounds in delicate and powerful subtleties and complexities that are movingly told.

Ngũgĩ will be joined “in conversation” by fellow writer and friend Chenjerai Hove. Mr. Hove is a Zimbabwean author, poet, essayist, playwright, and human rights activist. For over thirty years Hove wrote from his native country unafraid of the risks involved in writing and teaching about the ugliness of his government. As time went on, his work became an increasingly political target of attack and so, after endless bribes and countless death threats, Hove finally fled to exile in 2001.

As the Miami: City of Refuge writer-in-residence at the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at MDC, Hove brings his politically and culturally rich stories of exile, injustice and ultimate hope to MDC students and the Miami community for two years beginning January 2010.

Patricia Saunders,  an assistant professor of English at the University of Miami, will be conducting an interview/conversation with both writers after the reading.
