Marcus Garvey: Human Rights Champion @ Carrie P. Meek Center

“On August 13, 1920, Marcus Garvey and the UNIA published the “Declaration of the Rights of the Negro Peoples of the World,” said Professor Geoffrey Philp. “The declaration highlighted basic human rights, which were finally included in the United Nation’s “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” on December 10, 1948. Garvey and the UNIA were ahead of the world body by twenty-eight years!”

Join us for these lectures on Marcus Garvey’s visionary movement which championed the human rights of peoples of African descent in North America and the African diaspora worldwide.

MDC recognizes Black History Month each year with an array of community and educational activities at each of its seven campuses. College administrators believe students, as well as the community at large, should be mindful of the contributions made by Black Americans throughout this country’s history, both past and present.

RETHINKING GARVEYISM IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

The overwhelming support of President Barack Obama by the Black community in the recent presidential election demonstrates the necessity of continuing Marcus Garvey's legacy. On February 14, 2013 at the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center, Professor Geoffrey Philp will explore Garvey's personal and communal values in “Rethinking Garveyism in the Twenty-First Century." The presentation will culminate in a call to action for the exoneration of Marcus Garvey.

"In a time of climate change and other vexing social issues, many have questioned the relevance of exonerating a man who has been dead for almost seventy years," said Professor Philp. "My answer remains the same. Values. Everything begins with how we think about ourselves and our community. Garveyism changes how we think about ourselves and our community. At every juncture of Black history in the Americas whenever the values that Garvey espoused, RESPECT (Redemption, Education, Self-Reliance, Purpose, Economics, Community, and Tradition) have been embraced, we have experienced a renaissance."

“This discussion underscores what the Entrepreneurial Education Center is all about and highlights the work of two of our country’s most important leaders – Marcus Garvey and his “mentor” Booker T. Washington," said H. Leigh Toney, Executive Director of the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center. "Garvey’s vision of an educated, self-reliant and entrepreneurial black community remains a critical aspect of our work today.”

Brother to Brother: Marcus Garvey and the "Father Wound"

I'm very excited about the Brother to Brother program that has been spearheaded by Professor Isabel Rodriguez-Dehmer in College Prep, North Campus, Miami Dade College.

Professor Rodriguez-Dehmer has invited me to speak to her students, a group of young, Black males, who have been taking classes at the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center in Liberty City.

Our discussion will include excerpts from Brother to Brother along with some of my short stories in Who's Your Daddy?, and we will think about the following questions:

  1. If you had a chance to speak to the young Black middle school student what would you say about having goals and dreams?
  2. "It’s hard to choose a pathway in life until you have a value system in place"   What do you value?
  3. Question yourself. Does your value system lift you and the world up, or bring you down?
  4. What is the "father wound"? How does the "father wound" affect the characters in Brother to Brother and Who's Your Daddy?
  5. Who was Marcus Garvey?
  6. What are some of the values that Garvey espoused?
