The City of Miramar, Florida, is gearing up for a momentous occasion. On Saturday, August 17, 2024, from 8:00 p.m. to midnight, the Miramar Multipurpose Center will host the 20th Annual Marcus Garvey Rootz Extravaganza. This year's event marks the 137th birthday anniversary of Marcus Garvey, Jamaica's first National Hero, and promises to be a night filled with cultural pride, reflection, and celebration. Entry is free, and the community is invited to join in this commemorative event.

 Honoring Marcus Garvey's Enduring Legacy

Marcus Mosiah Garvey was a towering figure in the fight for Black empowerment and the promotion of Pan-Africanism. Born on August 17, 1887, in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica, Garvey's legacy continues to inspire movements for social justice and cultural pride worldwide. His advocacy for economic independence and self-reliance among African descendants has left an indelible mark on history. The 20th Annual Rootz Extravaganza commemorates his birthday and serves as a platform to reflect on his enduring influence.

 The Rootz Extravaganza: A Tradition of Celebration and Reflection

The Rootz Extravaganza has been a cornerstone event for two decades, bringing together community members, activists, and cultural enthusiasts to celebrate Garvey's life and legacy. This year, as we mark his 137th birthday anniversary, the event promises a rich program that includes music, dance, spoken word performances, keynote speeches, and the pre-release of "My Name is Marcus," a graphic novel about the life and legacy of Marcus Garvey.

 What to Expect:

·         Cultural Performances:

·         Enjoy a variety of performances that highlight the richness of African and Caribbean culture. The event will be a feast for the senses, from traditional drumming and dance by the Sasa African Dance Theater and the Drumming Fingers Children’s Ensemble to tenor soloist Steve Higgins and guest vocalist Lady Tiya.

·         Educational Presentations:**

·         Learn about Garvey's life, his impact on the Pan-African movement, and his vision for a unified and empowered Black community. Educational segments will provide deep insights into Garvey's philosophy and achievements.

·         Community Engagement:**

·         Engage with local leaders and activists who continue to champion the causes that Garvey held dear. The event will offer opportunities for networking and community building, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.

·         Special Guest Appearances:**

·         Look forward to the keynote address by Cimarron Reed-Bandele, founder of the Marcus Garvey Society, titled “One God, One Aim, One Destiny: Fulfilling the Vision of the Garvey Movement.” Additionally, prominent figures inspired by Garvey's work will share their perspectives and stories.

·         Pre-release of "My Name is Marcus”

·         Be among the first to experience "My Name is Marcus," a graphic novel that brings to life the extraordinary journey of Marcus Garvey. This pre-release is a special highlight of the event, offering attendees an exclusive look at this significant work.

The annual Marcus Garvey Community Service Awards will honor:

·         Marlon Hill: Attorney and community organizer

·         Catherine Malcolm: Businesswoman and philanthropist, co-founder of the Jerk Machine franchise

·         Peter Webley: Businessman, publisher of the Caribbean Today newspaper

·         Marcus Garvey Play: Performed by the Love Our Nation Children’s Theater Group from Dania Beach

·         Multimedia Presentations: Audio-visual presentations celebrating Garvey’s life and legacy
