The Clear Garvey's Name Committee, co-chaired by Mayor Hazelle Rogers and Vice Mayor Denise Grant of Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, is requesting a Presidential pardon of the Right Honorable Marcus Garvey, founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association.
Despite his widespread influence in the struggle for human rights and his
influence on freedom fighters such as Jomo Kenyatta, Nelson Mandela, Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and Bob Marley, Marcus Garvey remains a criminal
in the eyes of the Department of Justice of the USA. Our petition seeks to
restore and make whole the good name of Marcus Garvey, who was unjustly convicted
of mail fraud by the Bureau of Investigation, a forerunner to the modern FBI.
From the outset of his career, Marcus Garvey has been the subject of systematic
erasure by various governmental and private agencies. As a result, his
blueprint for achieving justice and economic empowerment, which he outlined
in "The Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey," remains
largely unknown. However, since the death of George Floyd and the flowering of
Black Lives Matter, the time has come to remove the stain of criminality from
the name of Marcus Garvey.
A Presidential pardon of Marcus Garvey should be the goal of justice lovers
everywhere. As Dr. Martin Luther King said, "Injustice anywhere is a
threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of
mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly
affects all indirectly." Our failure to correct the historical record and
restoring justice continues the threat of injustice as we seek truth,
reconciliation, and restoration of the honor and dignity of a leader in the
struggle for human rights.
By signing this petition today, you will assist us in correcting the Injustice
against Garvey. When we succeed, we will have moved closer to bending the arc
of the moral universe towards justice in our lifetime.
